I think you’re right. For a certain category of worker, the perks matter a lot, but there will always be some companies that are the one place in the entire world to work on a particular problem. If you really want to work on e.g. quantum computing or curing cancer or colonizing Mars, and there’s only one company that you think is going to have a shot at making that happen, then you’ll give up your perks to work there.

On the other hand, those are the companies that also benefit the most from keeping their workforce bubbled, so they still have an incentive to provide lunch, laundry, etc. Anything to ensure that employees are only ever talking to true believers!
