A lot more day-to-day work is tactical rather than strategic, at least at my career level. That’s fine, though. Strategy is fun to talk about, but even if you’re a c-level exec most of your day is taken up with immediate concerns — recruit this specific person, retain this one client, figure out how to get this particular project back on track.
It’s also dependent on company culture. If you have a meetings culture, memos aren’t an effective way to communicate (in fact, distributing a memo in a meetings-based culture would be pretty passive-aggressive). So the closest you can get is writing a memo for your own use, which is absolutely something I do. When I lost my hedge fund job, I wrote my wife a long, detailed email exploring the pros and cons of different career options afterwards, but that email was more of a reference for me than for her.
